LGBTQ+ people have always found ways to create community. From clandestine speakeasies to club floors crowded with celebratory dancers, we have create ways to celebrate devotion and life. While lgbtq+ bars have become a beacon for many in the community and manage to dominate conversations regarding gatherings, we hear far less about other types of places to appear together. What about those that don’t consume alcohol or desire a place to meet others with a much different vibe? Coffee houses have extended been the heart of their communities, where customers can sit and linger, read a book or have a conversation. There are several LGBTQ+-owned and affirming coffee houses all across the United States. 

The Pacific Northwest is established for its abundance of coffee houses and cafés. The birthplace of Starbucks has a coffee home for any mood or ferocity of coffee drinkers. Queer and women-owned, Squirrel Chopsis a hybrid coffee house/hair salon welcoming Homosexual folks (and their dogs) to gather in Seattle’s Central District. In our “Highlighting Queer-Owned Cafés Across the U.S.” article series, we’re spotlighting one LGBTQ+-owned coffee shop in each of the 50 states. Check out parts one, two, and three to catch up, and study on to learn more about some of our favorite queer-owned coffeehouses!

Nebraska: Amateur Coffee

Omaha’s Amateur Coffee is making waves for a number of reasons. Apart from offering exceptional coffee that they roast themselves, the shop is also 100% vegan, serving up tempting items like vegan chicken and waffles. The café was even recently nominated by VegNews for Best Vegan Coffee Shop. Another noteworthy feature? The coffee parlor also has a reusable glass jar program, through which they offer drink discounts to customers who bring help takeaway jars purchased from the shop.

Our monthly Community Café, which is completely free, where people can come along to meet and mingle with community members!

LGBT Foundation is a national charity based in Manchester working to empower LGBT+ people and communities.

Event information

We know how important connecting with other members of the LGBTQ+ community is. That’s why our café runs the first Saturday of every month from 12pm-4pm and is unlocked to all members of the LGBTQ+ community. We provide a warm, welcoming and friendly space for you to come together, and have a brew.

Whether you want to compete boardgames and make fresh friends, have a calm space to work, or even find out more about the support and services we offer as a health and wellbeing charity – the sound is place for you.

Come along and join us, our café is a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community and we’d love to see you there.
