In the northeastern corner of Ohio, Akron is a well-planned city spreading out over several hills. Although it’s just 40 miles south of Cleveland, Akron has its own vibrant homosexual scene centered around Highland Square. Many who survive in the suburban neighborhoods between the two cities opt to party here rather than driving to the larger city to the north. Students from the University of Akron and Kent State, and workers from the Goodyear plant rub elbows in the friendly bars and clubs, mingling easily in this well-planned city. A visitor will find limited places anywhere in America with a friendlier welcome.

You can fly into Akron-Canton Airport, but nearby Cleveland Hopkins International Airport often has more convenient connections.

Neighborhoods
Highland Square. Akron’s gay community seems to center around Highland Square, but gay bars are scattered in all directions. Almost all the businesses in the area are very gay-friendly.

The urban area of Akron was initially planned in 1825, and by 1841, it was named as the county seat of Summit County, Ohio. Many of Akron’s earliest residents were Irish migrants who were hired to help build the nearby Ohio and Erie canal. After the canal was completed, the town and its businesses continued to grow, being further encouraged by the arrival of railroads in the area during the second half of the 1800s. Many manufacturers had established headquarters and plants in Akron by the spin of the century, most famously The B.F. Goodrich Company and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Business. A Nightclub Appreciate No Other
The Interbelt is one of the oldest gay nightclubs in Akron with a compelling up-to-date history. Original owner Vernon Baker bought the club in the late 1970s, it has been expose for over thirty years. The club features diverse theme nights to provide entertainment to the local area, such as Hip Hop Mondays, Bad Girls Club on Thursdays, and Fuego Fridays. It has had many local talents and well-known drag queens who have performed, such as Plastique Tiara, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Roxxxy Andrews, and Manila Luzon. Now, every year, there is a charity event between The University of Akron and Kent State University called Battle of the Wagon Heel, which benefits the larger community in different ways. The amount of money raised from that night is split in half between Kent State’s LGBTQ+ emergency fund and Canapi in Akron.
But even before the club was there, the building, which was manufactured by local Akron architect M. M. Konarski, was known as the Ritz Theatre, a venue that hosted film and dwell entertainment.
