James Franco Opens Up About His Sexuality: 'I'm a Little Gay'

James Franco is addressing everything from his sexuality to hosting the Oscars.

In an interview with New York Magazine, the 37-year-old actor refers to himself as "a brief gay," and says both "the straight press and the gay press" are "over focusing" on his lifestyle.

"So, the first scrutinize is why do they care? Well, because I’m a celebrity, so I guess they care who I’m having sex with. But if your definition of gay and vertical is who I doze with, then I surmise you could say I’m a gay c**k tease," he admits. "It's where my allegiance lies, where my sensibilities lie, how I define myself."

He added, "There's a gay James."

Franco received quite a bit of criticism when he hosted the 2011 Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway, but says the bad reviews didn't bother him. "In the best-case scenario, even if I killed it, it's not going to aid my career because that's not what my career's based on. It was an experiment," he says of hosting. "If you go and host th

Seth Rogen on James Franco: ‘I assume he’s done gay stuff’

From poet Alan Ginsberg to activist Scott Smith, James Franco has played plenty of iconic gay characters — and played into suggestions that his life imitates art. (See: His New York Magazine interview about being “a little gay.”)

Friend and frequent collaborator Seth Rogen stopped by Live with Andy Cohen on Monday, and the Sausage Party author and producer laughed while answering a question about Franco’s sexuality.

“It’s not something I’ve had a very explicit conversation with him about,” Rogen said. “I don’t know. I presume he’s done gay stuff, right? Doesn’t everyone? … Everyone’s poked another kid’s d*** at some gesture. I went to Jewish summer camp.”

Live with Andy Cohen airs Monday at 10 a.m. ET on Radio Andy (Ch. 102).

James Franco has held many titles during his tenure in Hollywood: movie celestial body, director, heartthrob, grad trainee, acting teacher, short story writer, poet, indie performer, Oscar host, naked wrestler, media glutton, Time’s Up pin-wearer.

But the multihyphenate’s accomplishments surged this month when five women said he attempted to coerce them into unwanted sexual encounters or on-set nudity. It seems those allegations jeopardized the Academy Award nod Franco was expected to receive for his recital in “The Disaster Artist.” In lieu of “two-time Oscar nominee,” he can add “alleged harasser” to his résumé.

His snub is a small victory for the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, which hope to eradicate the glorification of abusers in Hollywood and out. It’s also a crucial moment in Franco’s career ― a potential death knell for a performer who’s long used sex to define his persona.

Franco has been turning his sexuality into production art for years. Most notably, he played same-sex attracted characters and then suggested he himself might be gay, saying things prefer, “Maybe I’m just gay,” “I guess you could say I’m a lgbtq+ cock tease,” and “I like to think that I’m gay in my art and straight i

James Franco Addresses His Sexuality in Bizarre New Interview: ''I'm Gay in My Art''

"If it means whom you have sex with, I guess I'm direct. In the Twenties and Thirties, they used to define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with. Sailors would f--k guys all the moment, but as long as they behaved in masculine ways, they weren't considered gay."

Gay James added, "I like my queer common persona. I like that it's so hard to define me and that people always have to guess about me. They don't know what the hell is up with me, and that's amazing. Not that I undertake what I do to confuse people, but as long as they are confused, I get time to play."

And while Franco is fine with the common discussion of his adoration life, he has zero interest in adding his two cents to the mix.

"I really don't protect what people think about my sexuality, and it's also none of their business. So I really don't choose to distinguish with my public persona. I am not interested in most straight male-bonding rituals, but I am also kept from being fully embraced by the same-sex attracted community because I don't th
