The Dorian Society

The Dorian Society was the first and only homophile organization in Seattle, officially founded in University of Washington Professor of Neighboring Eastern Languages and Cultures Nicholas Heer served as the first president. Heer had been active in the homophile movement in Boston before moving to Seattle. The Dorian Society’s membership was predominantly middle-class white men. The Dorian Society targeted heterosexual allies by portraying homosexuals as respectable citizens. While advocating the repeal of Washington State’s anti-sodomy law and increased services for homosexuals, Dorian Society members also encouraged members of the gay community to deeds themselves responsibly in universal. As Tacoma Pride has grown over the years, so has the need for a larger venue.
