The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly aiming to fetch home one of the greatest Canadians to ever pick up a baseball bat this winter.

With free agency opening this week in MLB and the rumour mill chugging along, there is reportedly a strong link between first baseman Joey Votto and the Blue Jays, beyond Toronto being printed on his birth certificate.

The Cincinnati Reds declined Votto's narrow option earlier this week, making the longtime actor a free agent for the first time in his career and prompting a heartfelt thank you video posted to social media.

While the 40-year-old may no longer be the player he once was while earning MVP awards and leading the league in on-base percentage, he still has at least one admirer in the Blue Jays front office.

For the first second, a major media outlet has addressed rumors about Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto possibly organism gay. The gay website Outsports.com featured an article by Jim Buzinski entitled, “Player Stressed, So Fans Conclude He Must Be Gay.”

Buzinski’s article tracks down a number of Internet references which allude to Votto’s alleged sexual orientation. Buzinski sorts through the Internet garbage to detail some of the more wacky theories concerning Votto’s abscence from the Reds lineup. Since the concrete reason for Votto’s extended stay on the disabled list was coincidentally revealed later on the equal day, there’s no reason to go into some of the insane postulates.

Votto spoke to the media Tuesday and revealed for the first time that he is suffering from depression, anxiety and grief caused mainly by his father’s death which occured last August.

When, a few weeks ago, I implored a gay baseball player to come out of the closet, I meant that—on his own—someone should step forward.

Let me stress that—on his own.

Over the past few days, the sports blogs and fan boards have been humming with the “news” that Joey Votto, Cincinnati’s exceptional first baseman, is gay. That, the word goes, is why Votto was been on the disability list since May 30 with what the team has termed “stress-related issues.”

Oy.

Just to make it clear: This isn’t how the whole coming-out-of-the-closet thing is supposed to go. If Votto is, indeed, gay (and I’m by no means saying he is), he should come out when he feels comfortable, or not at all. On a whole, I am soooo sick and fatigued of the is-he-or-isn’t-he-gay? bullsh$# we affix to celebrities. Why, oh why, are we so curious as to whether, oh, Adam Lambert is having sex with another man? How is that even remotely interesting?
