Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous star and brought so much beauty into this part, and at one aim I saw a youth in his eyes, and I think its crucial for the world to be reminded that we in the queer group were all children at one point. W
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are patiently waiting for the premiere of Eternals next week. As fans eagerly await the film's opening credits, one of the film's primary actors provided an in advance look at one of the film's most crucial aspects.
For this hour in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a film will feature an openly queer hero, Phastos, in a same-sex relationship. In a surprise interview, actor Brian Tyree Henry, who is responsible for portraying Phastos on screen, opened up about the importance of his character.
“Beyond a hope come true, it’s life-saving,” Henry told Adam B. Vary of Variety about appearing in his first Marvel film.
“I wish I had that when I was a kid to see this. My god. I wish! Can you imagine how many lives this is going to be saving — kids, young queer folk, who are being bullied, committing suicide, and not seeing themselves being represented? And now they get to see this — it’s above and beyond," Henry added when asked about the importance of his character.
Adding to Henry's comments, director Chloé Zhao said that Phastos is an extremely authentic character that doesn't feel forced. As she explained, Phastos' background, sexua
Aside from the lackluster cameo from Endgame director Joe Russo in Captain America's therapy session, the MCU's queer characters have only ever been implied. Fans knew director Chloe Zhao's Eternals was going to change that by featuring a gay, married couple, but now (thanks to a portrayer of half that union) Marvel diehards know which superhero in the sprawling cast will be boosting the queer representation of the universe —and the fact that they'll fetch a meaningful kiss on screen.
Speaking to NewNowNext, actor Haaz Sleiman opened up about his Eternals role and his superhero husband. Sleiman broached the topic when considering how much easier it is for queer young people now that mainstream media has begun embracing LGBTQ representation.
"I just shot a Marvel film with the first openly gay superhero, The Eternals," the player said. "I’m married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child."
Phastos, a tech-oriented weaponsmith in the comics, will be breaking ground for the MCU as its first openly LGBTQ superhero. And that's not all — fans wil
Well, according to Haaz Sleiman, who stars in the upcoming MCU film The Eternals, queer fans can expect to see ourselves reflected on the large screen in a major way this November.
“I just shot a Marvel motion picture with the first openly gay superhero, The Eternals,” he told New Now Next.
“I’m married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, and we depict a gay family and have a child,” he shared.
Haaz also revealed that the film will highlight the MCU's first on-screen gay kiss, saying, "Oh, yeah, absolutely, and it’s a beautiful, very moving kiss. Everyone cried on set."
"For me, it’s very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be," he added.
"We forget that because we’re always depicted as sexual or rebellious. We forget to unite on that human part," Haaz concluded.
The Eternals opens in theaters on Nov. 6 and I'll be in the theater displaying my support like:
