Just as bodily fluid jokes are a regrettable hallmark of contemporary kids’ films, casual homophobic wisecracks are an unfortunate staple of juvenile SNL-style comedies, a sub-genre aimed at frat boys who think nothing’s funnier (and, secretly, more terrifying) than the thought of sodomy. Adam Sandler’s The Longest Yard, an update of 1974’s Burt Reynolds-headlined classic about a motley group of incarcerated criminals who band together to beat the prison guards at football, is the latest member of this cinematic category, overflowing with so many gay-centric gags that it’s a wonder the filmmakers didn’t employ the film’s title for a penis-related pun.
Robert Aldrich’s pigskin original was, appreciate so much of the director’s work, a tribute to male codes of honor, ignoring the morality of its convict protagonists in favor of examining the ways in which men learn the importance of selflessness, sacrifice, honor, and anti-establishment rebellion against the powers-that-be. NFL quarterback Paul Crewe’s life has been on the skids ever since he was banished from the league for point-shaving. Aside from the “joys” of mean, oppressive, rich girlfriends and solitary booze binges, he doesn’t have much to live for. So Crewe doesn’t much care that after a drunken run-in with police, he winds up in a federal prison.
It just so happens, of course, that Warden Hazen has his own semi-pro football team staffed by the penitentiary’s sadistic guards. And those guards don’t have a decent team to apply against. That’s where Crewe comes in. Hazen assures Crewe that if he puts together a train squad made up of inmates, his three-year sentence will go smoothly.
At first Crewe doesn’t acquire much to work with, just a bunch of bulked-up sociopaths eager to put a major knock on their tormentors. But wouldn’t you know it, that very same prison just happens to own a former Heisman Trophy winner, Nate Scarborough, who volunteers to coach the ragtag team. The Longest Yard is a 1974 movie starring Burt Reynolds, that was later remade in 2005 starring Adam Sandler. It combines the two things (American) men care the most about: prisons and football.
Former NFL quarterback Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, who had been kicked out of football for shaving points,note (manipulating the score of a game for betting purposes) finds himself on the incorrect side of the regulation and is sent to a state penitentiary (Citrus State Prison in the original film, Allenville in the remake). The prison is known for having a semi-pro football team made up entirely of prison guards, but their team has fallen on hard times. The warden (Eddie Albert in the original and James Cromwell in the remake) wants Crewe to help spin things around, by assembling a team made up of fellow inmates to serve as a tune-up game for the guards.
