History– In the 1960s, Main Beach in Laguna Beach was not only a major tourist destination, but also known as the epicenter of the city’s gay culture, which was home to two beach-front gay bars, Dante’s and Barefoot. Scroll down the page to find a list of local same-sex attracted events in Laguna Beach.

The City eventually made Main Beach a public park, also acknowledged as the ‘window to the sea.’ The same-sex attracted culture naturally moved to the 1400 block of South Coast Highway, which was home to The Coast Inn, Boom Boom Room and a same-sex attracted dinner house, which has changed hands several times over the years. Bob Gentry was the first openly gay elected official in Orange County when he became mayor of Laguna Beach in 1982, further welcoming the gay people to town. He served during the height of the AIDS crisis.

Then on May 9th 2018, the City of Laguna Beach presented the LGBT Heritage and Culture Committee with a proclamation recognizing the month of June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Heritage and Identity Month in Laguna Beach.

Gay beach destinations plan for summer, with pandemic in mind

Ben Rimalower, 44, has been vacationing on Recent York's Fire Island since 2005. The island's Pines section, a popular beach destination for gay men dating back to the 1920s, has been a reliably safe and sunshine-filled locale for Rimalower and his friends, primarily other gay men, to consume the summer.

“I first fell in love with Heat Island from afar while in college in California during the early ‘90s,” he told NBC News. “It seemed like Shangri-La to me.”

Rimalower said even on the “queerest blocks” of New York Town, where he lives, he’s “uncomfortable kissing or holding hands” with another guy, “but on Fire Island, I’m free.”

This year, however, his annual trip to Fire Island Pines is shrouded in uncertainty.

“If we can go at all, it will be with lots of changes,” he lamented. “I hope we can be safe on the beach, because that’s my favorite part.”

“This is all so new and complicated,” he said, adding there’s still a chance he and his friends will cancel their trip. “We haven’t even broached the topic of residence rules yet, but I imagine at least at first we won’t be having any hookups or friends over.”

Old Orchard Beach, ME – Openly Gay Lifestyle Nearby the Ocean

Old Orchard Beach is a very antique oceanside town. First settled in 1653, it has beautiful Victorian cottages and old buildings.  It is built on the site of an old abandoned apple orchard known as the Rogers homestead. It is also home to the seaside amusement park known as Palace Playland, which is one of the older vintage enjoyment parks in New England boasting features like hand-carved carousels and a identity new super-large Ferris Wheel.  Another feature is a pier, first built in 1898, that stretches out into the water and that has a nightclub at the end.

Old Orchard Beach always draws hundreds of thousands of tourists to its seven miles of white beaches.  The boardwalk is the center of LGBTQ action in the peak month including a lot of “snowbirds” from Canada, gay bikers and people from all over the world.

Most of the homes and condos in the area are also located quite neighboring the beach. The downtown has many newer developments.  Many of the condos are nicely designed clapboard New England style dwellings that fit in nicely with some of the more expensive older vintage homes in the area.

Ten Pointers for a Queer Ole Time at Marshall’s Beach

With warmer weather approaching, talk of beach trips among your circle will surely float past you. In gay circles, it’s Marshall’s Beach. Perhaps you’ve never been to Marshall’s Beach. You heard about it from a confidant, maybe you’ve wondered where gays keep getting those up-close Golden Gate Bridge selfies. Maybe you just want to be nude on the beach with your friends in the sun. In any case, gay beach etiquette is inherited queer knowledge passed down from hoe to hoe, but I show it to you here.

In addition to your regular beach fare (sunscreen, towels, sunglasses, etc.), you should:

Poop first.

Gross! Well trust me, you will thank yourself. Go even if you don’t have to move. There are no restrooms on Marshall’s Beach. The closest facilities are a rough mile hike down the shore above family-friendly Baker Beach. No matter what you plan to do with your butt at Marshall’s Beach, remove the chamber before you get there. You don’t want to find yourself at the bottom of a cliff when last night’s dinner finally drops. On such a petite strip of land there are no trees or cover of any courteous, let alone anythi
